Engines

2.5L I4 Engine

A 2.5–litre 4–cylinder engine is standard in the GX model, producing 171 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 171 lb–ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm. This impressive output makes the 2.5L I4 engine one of the most powerful 4–cylinder engines in the small SUV market.

Besides being powerful, this engine is also one of the most sophisticated because it is light, efficient and refined. It features an aluminum block and head, improving the power–to–weight ratio and benefiting both handling and fuel efficiency. Double overhead camshafts improve engine breathing and high–revving response, which in turn improves performance and fuel economy. It also uses a variable induction system that delivers more power when the driver demands it, enhancing torque at lower revs and maximizing power at higher revs. Balance–shafts give this 4–cylinder engine the smoothness of a good 6–cylinder unit. The pistons are lightweight as well, improving throttle response, smoothness and the engine's ability to rev.

3.0L V6 Engine

A smooth 3.0–litre V6 engine, standard on GS and GT models and optional on the GX, generates 240 horsepower @ 6,550 rpm and a healthy 223 lb–ft of torque @ 4,300 rpm. A retuned version of the high–performance unit formerly found in the Mazda6 lineup, the 3.0–litre V6 provides even better freeway performance and has more power for heavy loads.

Like the 4–cylinder engine, it has an aluminum head and block to reduce weight, and better structural rigidity, to reduce vibration and improve refinement. It also uses double overhead camshafts to control the valves and improve engine breathing, boosting performance and improving gas mileage.

Towing Capacity

Equipped with either engine, the Tribute is one of the most capable haulers in its class; GS and GT models are equipped with a standard trailer towing package (including Class II towing preparation, frame–mounted trailer hitch and wiring harness).

The towing capacity for the Tribute is:

  • 2.5L I4 models: 680 kg (1,500 lbs).
  • 3.0L V6 models with towing package: 1,588 kg (3,500 lbs).

Transmissions

A smooth–shifting 6–speed automatic transmission is standard on 3.0–litre V6 models (and available on 2.5–litre I4 models). An electronic control system changes shift maps to suit driving conditions, switching between economy and power shift maps according to accelerator pedal inputs and vehicle speed. Built–in "logic" within the shift control keeps the transmission in a lower gear on steep inclines to eliminate the gear hunting that many automatics exhibit on steep grades; on a downhill grade, it suppresses unnecessary downshifting.

Mazda designers also kept the Tribute's sporty character in mind when considering the shift lever ergonomics. The gear lever for either transmission is situated high on the centre console, as accessible as possible to the driver's right hand, for easy and comfortable shifting.

All–Wheel Drive

Tribute models equipped with the automatic transmission can be outfitted with Mazda's active torque split all–wheel drive system, which debuted on the MazdaSpeed6 (and is shared with the CX–7 and CX–9), featuring a more aggressive transfer of torque to the rear axle in accordance with driving conditions. This intelligent system achieves a satisfying balance between the interactive control over the vehicle that makes it particularly enjoyable to drive, and confident handling stability necessary for snowy, wet or other uncertain road surfaces/conditions; engine power and torque are efficiently transferred to the road surface for maximum performance.

A sophisticated onboard computer monitors the engine, wheel speeds and transmission, using real–time data input on steering angle, yaw rate, lateral G–force and engine status to determine road surface and driving conditions; it then automatically adjusts front/rear wheel torque distribution between 100:0 and 50:50, sensing where traction is strongest, to deliver optimum drive power to each axle. The result is that the most power and traction are made available under all conditions; positive acceleration and confident handling are provided regardless of constantly changing road conditions, as well as the ability to fully balance the vehicle in a turn by skillful use of the accelerator pedal.

Because the active torque coupling is controlled electronically, it can react to wheel slippage much more rapidly than conventional gear– or fluid–controlled systems. It changes continually to suit changing driving conditions, and is completely automatic, so that no driver intervention is necessary. Unlike the mechanical systems used in many competitor offerings, which react only to wheel slip, the active torque transfer system in the Tribute predicts wheel spin and prevents it from happening in the first place. It also reacts faster than a hydraulic system, because there is no lag time waiting for a viscous fluid to heat up before splitting power between the axles.

A hill mode feature (6–speed automatic transmission only), allows the Tribute to climb or descend hills without the driver touching the brake pedal, giving them the ability to tackle hills with confidence. Once the driver uses the switch on the steering wheel to activate this feature, the anti–lock brake system is used to control the Tribute's speed. If at anytime during the ascent or descent the vehicle accelerates without driver input, the system uses the brakes to slow down the vehicle to the desired speed.

Steering
Mazda Tribute
The Tribute's sporty, car–like handling is a direct result of the attention to detail paid by Mazda engineers when designing the steering, suspension and braking systems. The Tribute delivers a smooth, agile ride, as well as the Zoom–Zoom experience expected in a Mazda.

An available active torque split all–wheel drive system provides more confident handling and control on unpredictable road surfaces, and an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system enhances steering control and response.

Steering

To enhance its sporty driving attributes, the Tribute incorporates rack and pinion steering with engine rpm–sensing variable power assist for greater steering precision and response. As a consequence, the Tribute handles exceptionally well at both low and high speeds: with variable power assistance, low–speed manoeuvring, such as parking, is easy; at higher speeds, reduced power assistance preserves road feel and steering feedback. It takes less than three turns of the steering wheel to go lock to lock for greater manoeuvrability, and a turning diameter of 11.2 m (36.7 ft) allows the Tribute to easily navigate crowded parking lots.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) is standard, replacing the previous hydraulic power–assist steering system, allowing for more precise steering control and responsive feedback. This system uses fewer components than the more commonly used hydraulically assisted systems found on most other vehicles. Utilizing EPS eliminates the power steering pump, improving noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and fuel economy.

Suspension

Many rival SUVs in the Tribute´s class have a truck–like body–on–frame chassis design, resulting in a frame that flexes more and provides a less stable platform for the suspension. The Tribute, however, is different from the competition, employing a unibody construction for superb structural rigidity. This improves ride and handling, contributes to fewer rattles and provides a more sport–oriented driving feel.

The Tribute is equipped with a fully–independent coil sprung suspension, with MacPherson struts at the front and a rear multi–link configuration. This ensures that each wheel responds independently to road conditions, increasing the vehicle´s sure–footedness and giving the Tribute more poise in difficult road conditions, such as traveling at high speeds or on unpaved surfaces. Nitrogen gas–charged shock absorbers give superb wheel control, either on– or off–road, and maintain their composure even after tough use. Additionally, front and rear stabilizer bars help maintain tire contact with the road to reduce body roll. A low centre of gravity and wide front and rear tracks (1,552 mm and 1,534 mm respectively) also enhance stability, handling and road holding capabilities.

Cargo
Mazda Tribute
Underneath its skin, the interior of the redesigned Tribute reflects its modern, sporty attitude, with seat fabrics and colour combinations, chrome accents and available high gloss piano black trim elements. It seats five passengers in comfort, while still providing versatility and excellent cargo capacity. Ergonomic enhancements include switches, gauges and instrument controls that are intuitively placed, easy to read, and user friendly, providing information at a glance or touch.

The Tribute offers a commanding driving position with excellent visibility; the elevated seating position gives the driver a better view of the road when traffic is congested or when weather conditions are bad. Front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive, with height adjustable headrests for optimal placement; GS and GT models add a 6–way power adjustable driver's seat with manual lumbar support. The steering column has an adjustment for tilt angle in order to accommodate a variety of driver preferences; on GS and GT models, the steering wheel is wrapped in high–quality leather for enhanced grip. The gear shifter is positioned high on the centre console for quicker and easier shift operation, giving the Tribute more of a sports car feel while still retaining the 'command' seating position favoured in sport utility vehicles.

Sporty high–grade cloth upholstery is standard on GX and GS models; GT models are made even more inviting with the addition of leather–trimmed upholstery and heated front seats. On GS and GT models, as well as GX models equipped with the automatic transmission, the centre panel is finished in an appealing high gloss piano black; chrome accents on the inner door handles and gear shift lever add a contemporary touch.

Air conditioning with rear seat heater ducts supplies all–season comfort for front and rear occupants. Power and convenience features include power door locks and power front and rear windows with a one–touch down feature on the driver's window. Cruise control is also standard on all models equipped with the automatic transmission, with illuminated steering wheel integrated controls for easy manipulation. A one–touch open and close moonroof control is standard on GT models, allowing for open–air driving enjoyment.

An AM/FM audio system with in–dash single CD player and four speakers provides quality entertainment for GX and GS models, enhancing the overall driving experience. A premium audio system with 6–CD changer, 7 speakers, automatic volume control, and Sirius satellite radio are standard for GT models. All models are also equipped with an auxiliary audio input jack that allows the easy connection of an iPod or other portable media device.

GS and GT models are also equipped with dual media controls on the steering wheel, giving drivers the ultimate in driving convenience. The driver no longer has to remove their hands from the steering wheel to change CDs or radio stations. Now, simply activating a switch on the steering wheel does the job, providing the driver with the type of entertainment they want.

Tribute occupants are provided with a wealth of storage spaces within easy reach throughout the cabin. Front and rear cupholders service the driver and all passengers, and each door contains an integrated storage pocket. The large centre floor console box boasts room for a compact laptop computer, with additional removable bins provided for stashing small items such as coins, sunglasses and portable media devices. An overhead console with dual storage bins is standard on GS models; GT models with the moonroof get an overhead console with single storage bin. Front seatback storage pockets (GS and GT models), ideal for holding maps and other items, and a large locking glove compartment round out the storage features.

A 60/40–split folding rear seat enhances cargo and passenger carrying versatility; the seats fold down via a convenient latch that can be operated with one hand. For greater cargo capacity, the seat cushions can be moved forward out of the way, or removed entirely, creating a virtually flat load floor (1,681 mm in length) from the liftgate to the back of the front seats. With the rear seats up or in use, cargo capacity is 828 litres; with the second row seats folded flat, cargo capacity increases to a generous 1,877 litres. For additional practicality, the liftgate features a rear window that lifts independently – ideal for easy access to the cargo area or for accommodating extra large cargo items. Finally, on GS and GT models, deep tint privacy glass on the rear side, quarter and liftgate windows and a sturdy retractable cargo cover protect contents from view and helps discourage theft.

Security features on the Tribute also contribute additional peace of mind. Remote keyless entry illuminates the interior at night, and two–stage power door locks allow the choice of unlocking only the driver's door for additional security; as well, a panic button on the key fob can be used to gain attention in an emergency by sounding the horn and flashing the hazard lights. To minimize the chance of theft, the Tribute has a standard engine immobilizer system to prevent starting the engine without the proper Mazda ignition key.

Active & Passive Features
Mazda Tribute
Safety has always been a priority for Mazda. There are two types of safety features – active and passive. An active safety feature is one that will physically aid the driver in controlling the vehicle, increasing the possibility of avoiding an accident. Active safety features on the Tribute include ABS with EBFD, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control System (TCS) and Rollover Stability Control (RSC), and all–wheel drive. In the unfortunate circumstance that a collision occurs, however, passive safety features help protect the occupants of the vehicle from injury. Passive safety features include chassis design, component safety features, airbag systems and crash management.

Guiding safety development principles for the Tribute's rigid unibody include:

  • Advanced dual front airbags, standard side impact and front and rear curtain airbags, ABS with EBFD, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control System (TCS) and Rollover Stability Control (RSC), and active torque–split all–wheel drive combine to provide a comprehensive package of active and passive safety features.
  • Standard front fog lights provide enhanced visibility during inclement weather conditions.
  • Vehicle design and construction, including Triple–H construction, crumple zones and side impact bars assist in protecting the occupants in the event of an accident.

The Tribute offers several other important features that give parents peace of mind: childproof rear door locks, a rear power window lockout feature and an ISOFIX child seat anchor. Childproof rear door locks prevent children from opening the doors from the inside, keeping them safely inside the vehicle, both while it's in motion or in a stationary position. A lockout feature on the rear power windows, controlled by a switch on the driver's side door panel, also prevents children from opening the rear windows. Along with the ISOFIX child seat anchor, the Tribute is equipped with three ceiling mounted child seat tether anchors; these anchors allow child seat to be securely fastened.

"Triple H"
Mazda Tribute
Triple H construction

The Tribute has an all–steel unibody construction that is not only very rigid but extremely strong. In the event of a collision, front and rear crumple zones and Triple–H architecture work together to protect occupants by absorbing and dispersing energy away from the passenger cabin. Triple–H architecture incorporates H–shaped structures in the roof, floor and sides to provide a rigid cell around the cockpit; side–impact door beams provide additional protection during a side–impact collision.

Brakes
Mazda Tribute
All Tribute models are outfitted with power assisted front disc/rear drum brakes for confident and stable stopping ability. The front brakes are ventilated for strong heat dissipation; the ventilated disc design allows cooling air to pass between the flat plates of the disc, making them more resistant to brake fade during repeated use, such as consistently applying the brakes on a long downhill stretch with many bends.

The Tribute is also equipped with a 4–channel anti–lock braking system (ABS), which helps prevent the wheels from locking up and aids in maintaining directional control under hard braking conditions, helping the driver steer out of hazardous situations with confidence, even on unpredictable road surfaces. This system is more advanced than a 3–channel setup, because every wheel has its own channel to provide individual braking control.

The Tribute's ABS system is further augmented with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) and Brake Assist. EBFD works by measuring braking force versus traction and allocating brake force to wheels that have the best grip for stopping before the ABS system activates. This advanced system helps to reduce the braking distance by using the precise level of brake modulation for confident stopping and optimum occupant comfort. Additionally, Brake Assist technology senses panic or emergency stopping, and quickly applies maximum braking force in emergency situations.

The Tribute is also equipped with a standard Traction Control System (TCS) that works with ABS and EBFD to enhance braking performance, helping the driver maintain directional control of the vehicle by preventing a loss of traction (such as when the driver uses excessive throttle). The TCS system uses the ABS wheel speed sensors to determine if there is wheel spin; if wheel spin is detected, engine management modulates the amount of power output by reducing fuel, ignition timing and throttle position to reduce wheel spin and/or applies the brakes to one or more wheels.

Stability Control (DSC)
Mazda Tribute
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)

Active safety features on the Tribute include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control System (TCS). The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system is designed to activate when the vehicle is taking a turn too quickly for the road conditions. DSC compares the driver's intended direction (from the steering wheel angle) to the actual vehicle path; if the system senses understeer or oversteer, it applies braking force, and reduces engine torque if required, to correct the situation. The Tribute also showcases an advanced Rollover Stability Control (RSC) system. This proactive system uses both body–roll rate and wheel speed sensors to determine when corrective action is necessary. A momentary torque reduction, combined with an automatic brake application, assists in restoring the Tribute to an even keel.

Restraint System (SRS)
Mazda Tribute
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)

Inside, the Tribute is equipped with advanced front airbags. Sensors measure the weight of the seat occupants, the force of the impact and the seat distance from the steering wheel in order to determine the appropriate amount of force for the airbag to be deployed, according to the level of impact.

The Tribute is further equipped with standard front side impact airbags that are integrated into the seats rather than the doors, making them equally effective regardless of seat position. Front and rear side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor are also standard, deploying from the headliner area and offering enhanced head protection during side impact collisions. If the sensor anticipates a rollover, it deploys the side curtain airbags early, maintaining inflation for approximately six seconds in order to guard against injury, as well as to protect the occupants from broken glass or other debris.

As well as the six standard airbags, the Tribute provides three–point safety belts for all occupants; in the event of a collision, the three–point seatbelt spreads the accident's energy over the occupant's chest, pelvis and shoulders, thereby reducing the risk of serious injury. The driver and front passenger also have height adjustable seatbelts that are equipped with pretensioners. In the event of a collision that causes the front airbags to deploy, pretensioners tighten the seatbelt when impact is detected to reduce forward body movement.

Along with the ISOFIX child seat anchor, the Tribute is equipped with three ceiling mounted child seat tether anchors; these anchors allow the child seat to be securely fastened.
